Found objects and memories
Found objects and memories
In Found Objects and Memories, I explore the tension between personal history and collective memory. This work began with a discovery—wooden shelves discarded on the street, and intimate remnants of another life: old photographs and letters from a German family, once private, now anonymous.
These objects, once deeply meaningful, are now without their original context, prompting questions: What happens to memory when those who lived it are gone? Do these traces still hold value, or meaning, for the rest of us? And why are some people able to part so easily with their most personal possessions?
By reassembling these found materials into a new installation, I confront the act of preservation—of memory, of identity, of the ephemeral. The work asks whether memory, once detached from its owner, can become collective. Can a stranger's letter stir recognition? Can a discarded photo carry emotional weight for someone who never knew the subject?
This installation invites viewers to reflect on what we choose to keep, what we leave behind, and how memory, both personal and shared, is constantly shifting, dissolving, and reemerging in unexpected places.
